Troop 156 originated on March 15,th 1957. In advance of that celebration the Troop placed a couple of articles in the Glastonbury Citizen looking for information about former scouts. We know from the Schneider family that the Troop was affiliated with South Church in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Eagle scouts George Schneider (GHS class of 1979) and Robert Schneider (GHS class of 1980), as well as Brother Eric Schneider (GHS class of 1984) and Scoutmaster dad, George A. Schneider, held a reunion at South Church in 2006. Their mother Val Schneider recounts the following in an email dated January 9, 2007 to then Troop historian, Andrew Snark: “At that time Troop 156 had a really fine group of boys and their dads were equally fine. The combination of scouts and leaders was great. Camp outs were a lot of fun and good growing experience for the boys. In fact, just this past May, those boys put together their own 20 year reunion held at South Church, which is where their troop meetings took place. Their memories of good times brought them together, and I wasn’t surprised to see what really great young men they turned out to be.”
From that time to now, Jim Bancroft, Bob Rudolf, Art Byram, Brady Kattman, John DiTomasso, Bill Vincelette, David Knaul, and now Steven Michaels have served as the troop scoutmaster.
In 2025, the troop was recognized by the Mayor of Hartford for gathering so much donated food during their Scouting for Food events over the years.
